Cartridge for coffee and soluble products in general
DESCRIPTION [001] The object of the present invention is a cartridge, capsule or wrapper to contain coffee or soluble or extractable products in general, in hot water under pressure or other extraction fluid, for the preparation of drinks, such as powdered products or granules, such as barley, powdered milk and the like, or leaf products such as tea, chamomile, infusions, and others.
[002] Specific reference will be made here to a cartridge for containing ground coffee, without detriment to the fact that such a cartridge can be used to contain other soluble products for the preparation of beverages.
[003] Two types of cartridges to contain coffee powder are substantially widespread on the market: rigid cartridges and semi-rigid cartridges.
[004] Rigid cartridges, having a substantially cylindrical or truncated cone shape, comprise two components of rigid plastic material, heat sealed or ultrasonically welded, in relation to each other. The coffee powder and a filter are placed inside the cartridge in contact with the cartridge wall, on the outlet side of the drink.
[005] Generally, at least the cartridge wall, on the water inlet side, and possibly also on the drink outlet side, is perforated. In this way, when the cartridge is inserted into a device for the extraction of drinks, hot water under pressure is injected into the perforated entrance wall, which, through the powder product inside the cartridge, preserves the aromas when generating the drink, which is dispensed on the outlet side of the cartridge.
[006] This type of rigid cartridge has the disadvantage that the product inside is exposed to the external environment, thus requiring additionally an airtight packaging to preserve the product from contact with the outside.
[007] This implies an additional cost of packaging.
[008] The semi-rigid cartridges comprise a cylindrical or cone-shaped container with a reduced thickness, for example, aluminum, which after being filled with the powdered product is closed with a membrane that can be broken, so that
2/8 the product is hermetically sealed inside the flexible cartridge.
[009] When the semi-rigid cartridge is inserted into the apparatus for extracting drinks, a punch pierces a wall of the cartridge to allow hot water to enter the product to form the drink, which is distributed from the opposite wall, which it is also usually drilled by means of an additional punch or an appliance plate.
[010] Such a sealed semi-rigid cartridge does not need an additional wrapper to preserve the product's flavor. However, the sudden rupture of the cartridge walls does not allow an optimal retention of the liquid inside the cartridge, and therefore obtaining a good quality drink.
[011] WO2010 / 137952 describes a capsule for containing powdered products for the preparation of drinks, comprising a substantially rigid circumferential wall, closed below and above by means of filter layers in fibrous woven or non-woven material. Said filter layers are perforated with mechanical means, in order to allow the passage of the fluid.
[012] US 5,656,311 describes a capsule suitable for containing a powdered product for beverage production, comprising a container body provided with a base, a side wall and an upper flange having a lip on which a membrane Closing is applied, provided with areas of less thickness suitable to facilitate its rupture, which happens by means of a suitable tool to perforate both the upper face and the lower face of the capsule.
[013] WO 2010/063644 describes a capsule containing the powdered product for beverage preparation, by passing a liquid through said product using centrifugal forces. The capsule comprises a container body having an open surface on which a closing membrane is applied, having a central portion and a peripheral portion suitable for being pierced by means of mechanical perforation, in order to allow liquid to enter and exit the drink from the capsule, respectively.
[014] The objective of the present invention is to eliminate the disadvantages of the prior art, providing a cartridge for coffee or soluble products that is versatile, practical, economical and simple to manufacture, with very high reliability in use
3/8 continuous by the common user, thanks also to very simple and reliable preparation machines.
[015] Another objective of the present invention is to provide such a cartridge for coffee or soluble products so as to be able to allow the production of a beverage of excellent quality.
[016] Another objective of the invention is to provide a cartridge that is able to guarantee a perfect conservation of the product inside, even for long periods, without the use of additional packaging wrappers. Another objective is to form such a cartridge so that it does not need drilling systems, thus avoiding the maintenance of the same as well as the resulting dirt.
[017] Another objective of the present invention is to provide a cartridge for coffee or soluble products that is capable of allowing a reduction in its packaging costs.
[018] These objectives are achieved by the cartridge for coffee or soluble products according to the invention, having the characteristics of independent claim 1 attached.
[019] Advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the dependent claims.
[020] Substantially, the cartridge for coffee or soluble products according to the invention comprises a container body which can be of substantially rigid plastic material, or of flexible material, such as thin and / or laminated aluminum, of cylindrical shape or preferably of cone trunk, without the bases, in which an outer ring edge or flange and an inner ring edge or flange are respectively provided. The respective sealing closing membranes are applied to these ring edges, consisting of a laminate comprising at least one film of plastic material, made for example from CPP (castpolypropylene - molded polypropylene), coupled to an aluminum barrier film or a film of very thin plastic, with easy barrier breaking properties. The plastic film has at least one incision, preferably obtained by means of a laser, which involves at least a part of its thickness, suitable to facilitate the rupture of the membrane to a predetermined
4/8 fluid pressure in the device to extract the drink.
[021] According to an embodiment of the invention, a plurality of small incisions are provided in the areas of the plastic film that are not glued to the barrier film.
[022] Other characteristics of the invention will become clearer through the following detailed description referring to its forms of incorporation, given purely by way of non-limiting example, illustrated in the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic view in middle section of a cartridge for coffee or for soluble products according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a view similar to figure 1, showing a slight variant of the form of incorporation of the cartridge according to the invention;
- Figure 3 is an enlarged exploded view of the detail indicated by A in figures 1 and 2, in a case where the cartridge body is made of plastic material;
- Figure 4 is a view similar to figure 3, in a case where the cartridge body is made of aluminum;
- Figure 5 is an enlarged view of part of a plastic material cartridge, as in figure 3, showing details of the closing membranes;
- Figure 6 is a view similar to figure 5, in the case of the cartridge made of aluminum. [023] Referring to these drawings and in particular, for the time being, to figures 1 and 2, the numeral 1 indicates as a whole the cartridge or capsule for containing coffee or soluble products in general, according to the invention. It comprises a container body 10, in the case in question having a truncated cone shape, without the bases, to which the respective sealing closing membranes 20, 30 are applied, after the interposition of the respective filters 21, 31.
[024] More particularly, referring to the illustrations of the drawings, the body 10 has, on the larger base, positioned on top, an outer ring flange or edge 11 with an external development 11, and on the smaller base, positioned below, a flange or annular edge with an internal development 12.
[025] When the cartridge is inserted into a device for the extraction of drink, it must have a water inlet side and a drink outlet side, which in the following description
5/8 it is assumed, respectively, that it is the smaller base of the cartridge, on which the membrane 30 is positioned, and the larger base, on which the membrane 20 is positioned.
[026] It is evident that, without departing from the scope of the invention, the water inlet side and the drink outlet side can be inverted in relation to those indicated.
[027] The forms of incorporation of figures 1 and 2 differ only in the fact that, on the water inlet side, the filter 31 is positioned, in one case, externally to the cartridge, between the ring flange 12 and the membrane 30 ( figure 1), and in another case inside the cartridge (figure 2).
[028] Filters 21, 31 are preferably made of non-woven fabric, for example, 100% PP (polypropylene), and are joined with flanges 11, 12 of the cartridge body 10 by means of heat or heat welding. other systems, such as by gluing or the like.
[029] The cartridge body 10 can be formed of plastic material, for example, by molding polypropylene PP, PLA, PBT or others, or by means of thermoforming of PP / EVOH / PP co-extruded, or other structures of barrier.
[030] Alternatively, the cartridge body 10 can be substantially flexible, obtained by means of deep drawing of aluminum, also lacquered.
[031] The enlargement of figure 3 shows the structure of the membrane 20 applied to the outlet side of the drink from the cartridge 1, with the structure of the membrane 30 on the water inlet side being the same.
[032] In this drawing, filter 21 was outlined with a dotted line.
The membrane 20 is obtained by means of lamination and comprises, from the outside to the inside, that is, towards the area in contact with the cartridge, an aluminum film 22 and at least one plastic film 23, such as molded polypropylene (CPP), one coupled to the other through an adhesive layer 24.
[033] The membrane 20 structured in this way is anchored to the flange 11 of the cartridge body 10 and to the underlying filter 21 by means of heat sealing or another fixation system. The same is true for the membrane 30 positioned on the water inlet side.
[034] Figure 4 is a view similar to that of figure 3, and illustrates the structure of the membrane 20 applied to the body 10 of a cartridge made of aluminum. The membrane 20 is obtained again through film lamination, and comprises, in this case, a film of
6/8 aluminum 22 facing the cartridge body 10 and at least one outer film 23 of plastic material, for example polyester (PET), coupled to each other by means of an adhesive 24.
[035] Again, the membrane 20 is anchored to the body 10 of the cartridge and to the filter 21, conveniently, by means of heat welding, after the interposition of a heat sealing varnish.
[036] The cartridge made in this way is completely sealed, hermetically, thanks to the aluminum barrier films, and therefore does not require additional packaging to protect the product contained therein against the external environment.
[037] In order to allow the membranes to rupture under a certain pressure of water or drink, the plastic films have at least one pre-incision, conveniently performed with a laser, involving part or all of their thickness.
[038] This situation is illustrated in figures 5 and 6, which respectively show a capsule with the body 10 made of plastic and aluminum material, with filters 21, 31 omitted for simplicity.
[039] These drawings show, by way of illustration only, a laser incision 40 that involves the entire thickness of the films 23, 33, thus causing a cut of those films, and a less deep incision 41, which involves only a part of the thickness of the films, causing them to weaken, but not their separation.
[040] Naturally, the type of incision of the plastic films 23, 33 of the membranes 20, 30 is chosen according to the pressure of the liquid in which the respective membrane should break, in particular of the membrane 20 on the outlet side of the drink.
[041] In fact, a greater retention of liquid inside the cartridge 1 to obtain high pressures causes a greater transport of product flavors, and therefore a drink of superior quality, which is not normally obtained when the cartridge is perforated by mechanical means.
[042] The Applicant, who has already carried out numerous tests, was able to observe that at least one incision 40 or 41 of the plastic films 23, 33 is necessary in order to obtain the rupture of the membranes at acceptable pressures, otherwise they would be necessary
7/8 very high pressures to cause rupture of the membranes, due to the elasticity of the plastic films, which could cause an unacceptable jet of outlet of the drink.
[043] The provision of the cut 40, that is, an incision that involves the entire thickness of the film 23 or 33, allows the rupture of the membrane 20, 30 by tearing the non-elastic aluminum film 22, 32 at relatively high pressures low. If rupture at a higher pressure is required, an incision 41 is made so as not to involve the entire thickness of film 23, 33. In this case, rupture of the plastic film is facilitated by incision 41 and obtained at a higher pressure than the previous one.
[044] From the tests performed, the best results were obtained by forming, on at least one of the membranes 20, 30, in particular on the membrane 20 positioned on the outlet side of the drink, and preferably on both membranes 20, 30, in areas of the plastic film 23, 33 not bonded to the aluminum barrier film 22, 32, from a plurality of small incisions 40 and 41, in order to cause, after the increase in the pressure of the liquid, the tearing of only small unglued areas, preventing the tear from spreading to the areas where the plastic and barrier films are attached, since the laminate that constitutes the membrane offers greater resistance.
[045] In other words, the provision of small incisions in small areas without adhesive between the plastic film 23, 33 and the aluminum barrier film 22, 32 causes the formation of small openings in these areas without adhesive, preventing an indiscriminate spread of the tear that would otherwise or could occur if the tear started to occur between the membrane films glued together.
[046] From what has been described, the advantages of the cartridge for coffee or soluble products in general, according to the invention, which is hermetically sealed, do not need mechanical means of perforation for the extraction of the drink, and allow the drink is dispensed at the required pressure, thus obtaining a drink of excellent quality.
[047] Naturally, the invention is not limited to the particular forms of incorporation previously described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but, on the contrary, numerous modifications of details can be made therein, within the reach of the person skilled in the art,
8/8 without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
